Case Study: Incorrect internet plan
Scenario: A business owner signed up with a prominent teleco's broadband on a $29.95 per month plan. This plan counted both
downloads and uploads, and included 200MB of data, and did not have a static IP address. Excess downloads where charged at
$150 per 1000MB, and the business owner was to be invoiced quarterly.
The first invoice came in at just over $3,000!
The business owner called the ISP, and were told that the expensive costs were because of excess charges, the internet connection
had been used well in excess of the 200MB of data per month. DJC was called in to investiage. We found that an employee had
installed some 'music sharing' software on her workstation. The employee thought this was acceptable because they only downloaded
a few songs, which only ammounted to approx. 15MB. What the employee did not realise, is that once they had downloaded the songs,
the music sharing software then shared those songs with the rest of the world, each day the same music was downloaded by 100's of
people, without the employees knowledge.
Solution: DJC Systems made the following recommendations:
- Switch to a flat rate plan
- Select an ISP who does not charge for uploads
- Enforce an employee acceptable use policy for the companies network
The business owner prompty had DJC switch the connection over to us, and has never needed to worry about their connection again.
Case Study: Wrong operating system choice
Scenario: An IT manager had been advised that their business had outgrown their existing network. They were advised to get a proper
server, running Windows Server 2003, and Exchange 2003, to act as an Outlook / email server. The manager promptly organised a quote
for server hardware, Server 2003 and Exchange, the cost of the software totalled just under $7,000!
Solution: Good thing the manager decided to check in with DJC. DJC's consultants advised the manager that Microsoft sell a purpose
built operating system that contains both Server 2003 and Exchange 2003, sold as one package. The limitations of this package were
that it will only support 75 users, which was more than sufficient for this company of 10 staff. This software, sold as 'Small
Business Server 2003' and cost just over $1,000. DJC Systems just saved the IT manager almost $6,000!
