Microsoft 365 Backup

Microsoft 365 backup, managed and tested

Microsoft keeps the service running. Getting back a deleted mailbox, a wiped SharePoint library or a OneDrive encrypted by ransomware is your job. We back it all up and do the restore when you need it.

Most businesses assume Microsoft backs up their email and files. It does not, at least not in the way you would expect. Under Microsoft's shared responsibility model, Microsoft is responsible for keeping the platform available. Protecting your data inside it, from deletion, corruption, ransomware or a departing staff member, is your responsibility.

What Microsoft does give you is a recycle bin with a time limit. Deleted email is recoverable for a short window, SharePoint and OneDrive for 93 days, and after that it is gone. Ransomware that syncs through OneDrive, or a mailbox deleted when someone leaves, can easily outlast those windows before anyone notices.

DJC's managed Microsoft 365 backup takes an independent copy of your Exchange Online mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, every day, and keeps it outside Microsoft's recycle bin rules. When something goes missing, you call us and we restore it, whether that is one email or an entire account. It sits alongside our data protection and managed Microsoft 365 services.

What Microsoft 365 backup covers

Exchange Online email

Mailboxes, calendars and contacts, including shared mailboxes, restorable down to a single message.

OneDrive

Every user's files, so ransomware that syncs through OneDrive or a deleted account does not take the data with it.

SharePoint and Teams

Sites, document libraries and the files behind your Teams channels, recoverable to an earlier point in time.

Restores done for you

You tell us what is missing and when it was last right. We find it and put it back. No console for you to learn.

Staff departures handled

Keep a leaver's mailbox and files in backup without paying for a Microsoft licence to keep the account alive.

Evidence for audits

Backups are a named control in both SMB1001 and the Essential Eight. We give you the evidence when an auditor or insurer asks.

If IT is your responsibility

An owner, not an account manager

You deal with Daniel or Julian Church directly. We keep the client list deliberately short so the people who answer already know your environment.

Numbers you can defend

Every engagement starts with a costed IT roadmap: what technology should cost this year and next, in business terms you can take to a board or a budget meeting.

Working alongside internal IT

If you already have an IT manager or a small team, we are not here to replace them. Co-managed IT adds tooling, escalation and after-hours cover around them.

How co-managed IT works

Why DJC

  • We test restores, not just backups. A backup nobody has restored from is a hope, not a plan. We restore from it as part of our regular reviews.
  • Part of a wider security picture. Backup is your last line of defence. Our managed cyber security tiers pair it with Huntress detection and response, so most incidents are stopped before you need a restore.
  • Backed by an SMB1001 Diamond and ISO 27001 certified team. DJC holds SMB1001 Diamond, ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certification, so we run our own backups to the standard we advise on.

Quick answers

Doesn't Microsoft already back up Microsoft 365?

Microsoft keeps the service available and protects against its own hardware failures, but it does not keep long-term, point-in-time backups of your data. Deleted items sit in a recycle bin for a limited time, 93 days for SharePoint and OneDrive and less for email by default, and are then permanently removed. Microsoft's shared responsibility model puts protecting your data on you.

What does Microsoft 365 backup protect against?

Accidental or deliberate deletion, ransomware that encrypts files synced through OneDrive, a compromised account that deletes or alters data, and data loss when a staff member leaves and their account is removed.

Is Microsoft 365 backup included in DJC's managed cyber security?

Yes. It is included in every managed cyber security tier, from Bronze up. It can also be taken on its own if you are not ready for a full tier.

Does backup count towards SMB1001 or the Essential Eight?

Yes. Regular backups are one of the Essential Eight mitigation strategies, and backup controls are part of SMB1001 certification. We provide the evidence an auditor needs to see.
